Alexander McQueen finale. A bevy of gorgeous underwater sea urchin shapes.
Moving his third show for the house of Hermès to the opulent École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Christophe Lemaire, with Jane Birkin sitting in the front row, seemed to channel her laid-back, laissez-faire demeanor for this fall collection. With a heavy focus on leather (no surprise, really), the garments targeted an urban dweller circa late 1970s/early 1980s that centered on layered pieces like fringed tweedy shawls, side-pleated gaucho pants, wrapped robe coats in wool or arctic fox and perfectly cut matte leather baseball blousons (that stunning English boy-girl model Cecilia Chancellor was wisely cast for the show). But, lest we digress, there was plenty of leather to love. Coats cut in rich green suede and leather, collarless and fastened with snaps and zippers, they beautifully juxtaposed the “evening” selections Lemaire devised. Printed silk scarves were cut into gilets and soft tunic dresses, and wide crop pants were shown against a cacophony of patterns in an homage to Gustav Klimt.
