In one word: comfort. Michael Kors for fall is a relaxed state of elegance, where looking good is synonymous with feeling good. Call it wintertime chic for a fast description, but the cozy mountain lodge feel from the first pair of looks set the tone for the collection (shockingly, not a single dab of bronzer was used backstage). Melded with showgirl qualities, the lineup of terrific separates—never once fussy or overdone—made these fabulously approachable wares. Among the standouts were large belted furs, red-and-black blanket-plaid coats and skirts, cable-knit sweaters (the chunkier the better), long and lean skirts and après ski pieces that made for the complete woman when complemented by the bias-cut satin and beaded gowns. As for the accessories? They were beautiful. Framed doctor bags, furry hats and Mary Janes stacked on metallic chunky heels required no extra effort.

The venue could not have been more an antithesis. Held at a raw concrete oasis that, in a few months time, will be transformed into Oscar de la Renta’s new West 42nd Street headquarters, the designer’s cruise show had the packed house harking back to another time—and climate—altogether, specifically to the Cubism movement in Paris some 100 years ago. The brush strokes and artistic inclinations of Juan Gris, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso were squarely—and rather brilliantly—laid out on classic de la Renta canvases (cardigans, skirt suits, simple sleeveless sheaths, volumized cocktail dresses and simple blouses), resulting in collage-like, trompe l’oeil mixtures of graphically placed paillettes, patchwork appliqués, newspaper, guitars, and “Cubist scribble” prints. Despite their jumping off points, the collection was never heavy; instead, the silks, cottons and light-as-a-feather tweeds provided just the right amount of toughness to complement, and support, the beautifully placed pieces of bijoux.
