Giorgio Armani - Runway Review

That the Giorgio Armani show happens to coincide with the Academy Awards surely is no coincidence. Armani’s designs, long a red carpet staple, were at their finest with this “Easy Chic” collection, which redefined the notion of refined tailoring (accessorized with only masculine flats, natch). Such has been an Armani motif, men’s wear played heavy into the collection, but they were dealt with a hand light enough to accommodate an oversized fedora and hot pops of orange and fuchsia throughout. The collection started with a sleek gray pantsuit complemented by graphic prints. Furs were prominent, including shearling, rabbit and faux. When evening came around, the whole aesthetic came across as young and sporty. Tops came beautifully embroidered in crystal while a black beaded jumpsuit was stunning—made all the more so by the silver-embroidered zipper down the front.

Prada Fall 2012 Runway Review

Overhead neon-light strips and a vast purple carpet embellished with deco-Navajo motifs set the tone for Miuccia Prada’s fall show, a 41-strong army (not unlike her recent men’s show) of women who marched out in lean silhouettes paired with platform shoes. A bit intimidating for the Prada ingénue? Most definitely. But ask Prada herself, and she’ll say this powerful show was a blend of Edwardian rigidity coupled with the Elsa Schiaparelli moment she’ll soon enjoy at the Costume Institute in May. That’s not to say there wasn’t plenty to covet—and that is easy to wear. A bustle-pleat jacket opened the show, followed by abstract tailcoats that were festooned with crystal and jet embroidery. Prada also went down memory lane with the oversized embroideries, geometric prints and strong color combinations the world has come to identify her with. The Op Art moments were easily her best, particularly when everything from the coat and pant to purse and shoe featured a different print a la David Hicks. This was, surprisingly, a pant-heavy collection—a territory Prada rarely delves into with such an emphasis. But it all worked—and with much acuity.

Bottega Veneta - Runway Review

Season after season, Tomas Maier continues to reaffirm the notion that the Bottega Veneta woman emanates elegance and chic. There was little deviation from that for fall, as the dark, exquisitely tailored coats and suits left most, if not all, in awe. These are clothes women with significant means dream of wearing; the complete picture is there, from the flat riding boots to the gloves and pearl earrings to even the dash of burgundy lipstick to finish (could a beauty line be far off?). In a fast-paced show, the models crackled with energy—a peacoat and tunic were styled with oversized rock-crystal brooches while dresses buzzed by awash in arty prints, textured embroideries and, of a beige crepe number, perfectly lined to the body down to the silver-bead brooch. Anyone worth her fashion credo knows Bottega Veneta is at the top of its game; these might be fantasy clothes to most, budget-wise, but for that rarified sliver fortunate to own these magnificent creations, they’re much more than a crucial must-have. They’re a way of life.

Gucci Fall 2012 Runway Review

Continuing the harder-edged theme we first saw during New York Fashion Week, Frida Giannini, at the start of Milan Fashion Week, kicked things into high gear with a Gucci collection that was indulgent to a default—but with extra sex appeal. Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite period, Giannini imagined her girls as Edward Burne Jones’s modern day heroines. The clothes were darkly romantic; an outstanding variety, the color palette was kept muted and elegant while masculine motifs were interspersed throughout. The Gucci girl isn’t trying too hard for fall; from the narrow black velvet skirts and military jackets to the stunning floral patterns and fitted sheath-dresses, it was all there for the taking. As for evening? The dark, almost Goth-like, gowns offered something for everyone: off-the-shoulder in emerald green silk-and-velvet to a chiffon burgundy dress with trailing ruffles.
