Ralph Lauren Collection - Runway Review

A little Downton Abbey—yet still classically all Ralph Lauren. The designer’s fall show, set to the popular show’s theme music, might have seen a bit direct in influence, but this show—a love fest to grand English country living—had all the cinematic qualities that have come to be synonymous with the Lauren name. Watching this show, one couldn’t help but think of shooting parties, candlelit dinners and black tie balls a la The Great Gatsby. Tweeds, Fair Isles, jodhpurs, bias-cut slips and flapper style dresses exquisitely beaded all made for a complete revolution that was, in a nice twist of fate, completely wearable in the 21st century.

Every gamut of a Ralph Lauren life was addressed. From the opening looks that featured a heavy menswear emphasis and cozy separates to a full-on glamour fest that was breathtaking. The wider leg silhouette of the trousers was simply beautiful. There were some darker moments, such as when a black moto jacket came out or a chic black skirt that featured a pleated skirt sliced with sheer panels. And for evening? Long gowns any girl could easily love; among the best, a column black velvet beaded at the neck.

Ralph Lauren - Runway Review

With a glossy white runway made of glass tiles capped by three steps at the end an enormous bouquet of hydrangea, roses and calla lilies greeting guests, Ralph Lauren certainly knows how to make a first impression. Pastel 1920s screen siren was the apparent theme from look one—a series of pastel sportswear pieces in Easter-appropriate hues of coral, daffodil, robin’s egg and celery. Pretty was the pink blouse worn with mint green trousers and a gauzy baby blue cardigan, accessorized with pastel espadrille platforms. For evening, out came creamy white gowns and bead-heavy slips in his favorite Art Deco shapes that channeled that high-polish glamour that he has become synonymous with. Complementing the rich hues were a number of floral looks that were “vintaged” (shredded and aged). However, at the end of the day, it was the evening portion that stole the show. The number of white gowns recalled his all-white collection from 10 years ago, shown after 9/11.

Runway Review: Ralph Lauren Fall 2011

by Americana Guest Blogger, Jim Shi

Far from his jaunt to the English countryside for spring, Ralph Lauren jetted to Shanghai for a fall collection that was Far East exotic, elegant and supremely chic. Casting a slew of Chinese models, including one, Sui He, who opened the show, Lauren made clear his new direction. His Chinese references were discreet at first—red in the lacquer of a high heel, jade and coral jewelry, tassels on evening clutches—featured on conservative looks that included a white shirt-black trouser ensemble that was classically tailored. As the fabulous show progressed against a Chinese Deco doorway, the references became more evident. Chinoiserie-themed embroideries, cheongsams and red silk smoking jackets complemented the Art Deco Orientalism of the jewelry, which featured drop earrings and belt buckles of faux jade, coral and onyx. Lauren was careful not to tread into costume territory. As has become the norm, his eveningwear was marvelous, the black columns with geometric beadwork a palette cleanser to others in burgundy velvet and jade silk.
